Sphere on Sunset

West Hollywood is contemplating an impressive addition to its skyline with the proposal of a 50-foot glass sphere soaring over Sunset Boulevard. This ambitious plan, titled the “Sphere on Sunset,” took center stage at a recent special meeting of the West Hollywood Planning Commission’s Sunset Arts & Advertising Subcommittee.

Unlike the famous Las Vegas Sphere, this novel structure is not geared towards live performances. Instead, the “Sphere on Sunset” aims to house a three-level venue dedicated to live broadcasting, comprising podcast studios, a reception area, green rooms, and a spectacular rooftop terrace. Additionally, the venue is set to feature a media-themed plaza welcoming the public round the clock.

Nestled between Olive Drive and Kings Road, the proposed sphere finds its place amid the Pendry West Hollywood and the Best Western Plus / Sunset Plaza Hotel, as per the plans.

This futuristic structure is envisioned to encompass three digital billboards covering 2,000 square feet. While a portion of these billboards will be utilized for advertising purposes, the remainder is planned to be employed by the city for arts programming.

The project’s vision extends beyond a contemporary architectural marvel. The developer aims to offer “The Experience,” an outdoor exhibition narrating the captivating history of the broadcasting and entertainment industries. This feature is designed to be an interactive space presenting historical timelines, images, and artifacts, offering the public a deeper understanding and appreciation of the role Sunset Boulevard has played in shaping these industries.

Despite the innovative concept, uncertainties remain about the logistical details, including how this substantial glass orb will be supported while floating eight feet above the ground.

The next steps for the “Sphere on Sunset” include securing recommendations for zoning and permits. Once part of the application package presented to the full Planning Commission, the proposal will require final approval from the West Hollywood City Council.
