Deep Sea

Indie animation distributor Viva Pictures has secured the North American rights to the enchanting 3D animated feature, “Deep Sea,” which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Priced at $80 million and directed by Tian Xiaopeng (known for “Monkey King: Hero Is Back”), this Mandarin-language gem is set for an exclusive release in select theaters nationwide on November 24th.

A deviation from Viva’s typical focus on kids-and-family content, “Deep Sea” unfolds the tale of Shenxiu, a young girl swept into the sea during a family cruise, who discovers a mysterious underwater restaurant. In this fantastical world, she encounters the conniving head chef, Nanhe, along with his endearing crew of otters and sassy walruses. Together, they embark on a journey to save the restaurant and reunite Shenxiu with her long-lost mother, set against a mesmerizing backdrop of swirling colors and breathtaking vistas.

Having graced esteemed festivals like Tribeca, Annecy, Fantasia, and Sitges, “Deep Sea” is scheduled to feature at the Denver Film Festival and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards later this year. The film’s producers include Yi Qiao (“Ne Zha”), Wang Jing (“Legend of Deification”), and Wei Yunyun (“Ne Zha”).

Victor Elizalde, President of Viva Pictures, expressed excitement about collaborating once again with Tian Xiaopeng, noting, “DEEP SEA represents a pivotal juncture at Viva, as we embrace a renewed commitment to championing cinematic artistry characterized by breathtaking visuals and enthralling storytelling.” He emphasized that “Deep Sea” is a unique cinematic experience deserving of the big screen, aligning with Viva’s dedication to theatrical releases.

Viva Pictures, recognized for bringing “The Amazing Maurice” to Sundance and 2,000 North American theaters earlier this year, has a diverse portfolio that includes animated and live-action titles such as “Rally Road Racers” with J.K. Simmons and Jimmy O. Yang, “100% Wolf” featuring Jane Lynch, Samara Weaving, and Loren Gray, and an adaptation of R.L. Stine’s “Zombie Town” starring Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and Madi Monroe.

The deal for “Deep Sea” was negotiated by Elizalde for Viva Pictures, with Clément Magar at Fortissimo Films representing the filmmakers.
