The Bay of Spies

The cameras have stopped rolling on an exceptional World War II series for Poland’s TVP network. Set against the backdrop of 1940s Gdynia, “The Bay of Spies,” directed by the award-winning Michał Rogalski, known for his Screenplay Award at the World Film Festival in Montreal for “Summer Solstice,” promises to be a riveting production.

Drawing inspiration from true events, the series unfolds the story of Franz Neumann, a young Nazi Abwehr officer who uncovers his Polish heritage. Leveraging this revelation, Franz transforms into a spy for the Allies, adopting the code name ‘Got.’ Tasked with gathering intelligence on the German Navy (Kriegsmarine), Franz navigates a world of charm and charisma, manipulating those around him, ensnaring unsuspecting women in love, and infiltrating the German elite.

In addition to being a homage to the architects and engineers behind the pre-war city of Gdynia, the series aligns with TVP’s mission-oriented programming strategy. Aleksandra Kaźmieruk, Head of Global Distribution at TVP, emphasizes the importance of promoting original content crafted by Polish talent for both local and international audiences.

“This show has everything you need in a series – beautiful cinematography, music, costumes, and unexpected plot twists against the background of a little-known but incredibly important part of Second World War History,” she adds.

Produced by Akson Studio, the screenplay for “The Bay of Spies” is a collaborative effort by Michał Godzic (known for “Chasing Dreams” and “Wartime Girls”) and Wojciech Lepianka (“My Father’s Bike”). The series promises a blend of historical significance, visual splendor, and gripping storytelling, making it a noteworthy addition to the landscape of wartime dramas.
