The anticipated awards season adorned in shades of pink continues to unfold.

At the upcoming 33rd annual Gotham Awards ceremony on November 27 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the spotlight will shine on the highest-grossing film of 2023, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” The film is set to receive the inaugural Global Icon & Creator Tribute from the Gotham Awards, celebrating its exceptional impact on global audiences.

The Icon & Creator Tribute, a distinguished accolade crafted to honor cultural icons and the talented filmmakers behind their stories, finds a worthy recipient in Greta Gerwig. Her journey with the Gotham community began with a Breakthrough Actor nomination in 2010 for her role in “Greenberg.” Since then, she has continued to make waves, earning nominations for Breakthrough Director and Best Screenplay for her 2017 film “Lady Bird,” which also garnered a Best Picture Oscar nomination.

Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, expressed enthusiasm for the recognition, stating, “Across the globe, audiences have fallen in love with the inventive world of Barbie and its razor-sharp original script, dynamic filmmaking, emotional and hilarious performances, vibrant set and costume designs, and electrifying original music.” He lauded the creative team behind the film for transforming Mattel’s beloved icon into a cinematic masterpiece.

“Barbie,” featuring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken, has proven to be a global phenomenon, amassing a staggering $1.44 billion worldwide and $636.1 million domestically. As the top-grossing film of 2023 in both categories, it solidifies its place in cinematic history, ranking 14th and 11th all-time, respectively.

The star-studded cast, including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Simu Liu, alongside the creative collaboration of screenwriters Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, have collectively contributed to the film’s success.

In celebrating “Barbie,” the Gotham Awards not only acknowledge its box office triumph but also commend the artistic vision and collaborative effort that brought this unique interpretation of the iconic doll to the silver screen.
